I like to write when I'm exhausted. My walls are down, the masks are in bed, and I am free, if by no other cause than a complete lack of energy, to be entirely honest. When I'm rested my head gets in the way of my heart, if you know what I mean.
So hmm... I'm no longer with Nicholas. Not gonna lie, it's a roller coaster ride. But the weird thing is I'm not taking it as if I'm not beautiful or good enough. I mean, I worry about whether or not I did something wrong or he suddenly saw something he couldn't stand, but really, that's not my biggest fear, either. My biggest fear is not having him as a friend. I fear that we won't be able to continue on where we were before. I realize that it won't be the same, but something close to it...like almost the same would be good.
I worked at the well tonight. My hope in agreeing to do so was that it would distract me from my wounded heart. For the most part, it did just that. However, since Nicholas and I spend lots of time there, you can imagine that there were challenging moments. After Sal and I were done shutting everything down for the night we stayed and chatted with a few patrons. I was reading the staff journal (to myself) and there was a question that asked, "what is your favorite memory at the well?"
If I were to respond, I may say something like this,
"Several years ago, before I left for college, before I became 'Asher', the Well was alive with conversation and curiosity. The sheer diversity and quirkiness of both the staff and Wellers provided an endless source for both deep conversations and relationships. It was not unheard of, back then, for the staff at the time to kick Aza, Amanda, myself and many others, out so they could head to bed. And on the cool summer nights we would sit in the parking lot talking and listening, utterly oblivious to the passing time until someone would notice a lightening in the night sky's blue. Lighter and lighter and then there was purple haze, and pink, and then orange... and the sun would rise. In a slothful panic we would remember our jobs, our meetings, our classes, say 'goodnight' and part ways, hoping for two, maybe three hours of sleep before the demands of life began again.
We were blissfully unaware, in so many ways, of how unusual our ritual was. No one had yet told us how dysfunctional we all were, or if they had, we had failed to listen. We knew little of boundaries and balance and even self-love, but we had something that I can say I truly miss: a belief, naive as it may have been, that we could change the world, that we had it within our hearts, minds, and spirits to change the world for the better.
Now, five and a half years later, the dreams of a better world, of infinite possibilities, are buried beneath wounds, and failed attempts and educated theories. I can no longer look at a situation and think, "I can fix this! This I can change!" Instead, my degree-holding mind reminds me that failure is emanate, that the world can't really be fixed with belief and hope and a new program. My wounded heart tells me that I cannot succeed because I have failed and because I am too imperfect for anyone to take seriously. My friends, too, dream a little less. And if they have not yet stopped dreaming, they have spoken less and less of it, for our naive dreams were met with cynicism and doubt, and the fear of foolishness lingers just below the surface.
My favorite memory of the Well of the past is also my prayer and hope for the Well of the future: That we may begin to dream again, and that we would dream dreams that are larger than life and believe that we, even in our imperfections and failed attempts, our strong and able to take a stand for something and change the world around us in ways that others cannot fathom. May we begin to remember the beauty and necessity of conversations and relationships so good that they land us sitting on pavement at 5 in the morning, watching the sun wake from its slumber. May we never forget that it is the dreamers that the world depends upon to deliver us from our fatal prison of cynicism."

Community
The past 16 hours have been full of amazing expressions of love. It turns out, no one thinks I'm over-reacting, no one thinks I'm ridiculous, and everyone loves me.
Before I go any further, a big thank-you to the Mars Hill community for making their worship project available online for listening. The inward direction has brought me a lot of comfort today.
It started last night with DeAndra allowing me to not talk, Aza allowing me to talk... and today started with the prayers of my friend Casey, followed by Jay who called to make sure I was alright & pray for me. DeAndra came and got me from work and we grabbed dinner together. I came home, sat alone for a while, and then Casey called me and we met up at the Well. We talked some about Nicholas and such, but soon he got me in a debate over baptism (he's catholic, I'm not) in order to distract me from the hurt for a bit. I got to laugh tonight.
Even though I spend most of my time numb over this, I know I'm messed up, or at best incredibly distracted. I forget conversations and events not long after they happen. Like, I completely forgot that DeAndra had dropped me off at my car and that I went home and then drove myself to the Well. I was convinced we came together. eh!
I think tomorrow Aza and I are going to hang out and probably DeAndra and I in the evening.
Sunday, of course, means church, Monday, nothing yet, and Tuesday is horseback riding, so I'm trying to look forward to things and keep myself occupied.
Thanks for your patience, friends.

Beginning these types of entries is always a challenge. How do I communicate what needs to be said in an honest, authentic, and appropriate way?
Last night we "redefined" our relationship. "We" being Nicholas and I. What that means now is that we are not a couple, yet want to remain friends. Personally, I'm hoping he gives me a day or a few to heal before we resume the friendship stuff. I am overwhelmed with all ranges of emotion. And when I think of all that I learned and all the ways I grew, it is difficult to grasp that it's over. I am praying that I can learn and heal through this process and resist the urge to wear a mask that says "all is well and bright in my world," but not be so wounded that the hope of Jesus does not shine.
God is good and he has provided me with friends that have and will let me cry and leaders that write me emails of encouragement and call and say, "hey, I'm here" and girlfriends who take me home even though the want to stay out and who bring over ice cream and automatically side with me because I'm their girl. I am thankful that even the ones who didn't agree with Nicholas and I being together have said, "this was real and it's okay to grieve."
I want to resist the urge to say, "here's all the good in this" because I want to feel what's going on inside and know that I have dealt with this in a way that won't come back to bite me later. I want to take my time and feel what I'm feeling, be where I am at, and move on when I'm ready.

my 15 yr old brother is more accident prone than I, it seems. Last month he had a level-three sprain, and last night he broke his left collar bone. Prayers for him would be awesome. thanks!

Thanks for the prayers, friends! Things have calmed down and I think most of my fears can be laid comfortably to rest.
Being in a relationship is quite the adventure! Two weeks into things and I'm fairly sure we do more conversing than most couples; figuring each other out, learning boundaries and needs. It's fun, stressful, exciting, confusing... all of these things, all at once!
It amazes me how much you can learn from another in such a short period of time and how much their belief in you can radically change your world. It's crazy how much he cares for me and believes in me. The experience has been wild. I've never felt so comfortable around another guy, never thought I'd find someone who wants me to be nothing more or less than exactly who I am; a guy who, even though it's different than what he's use to, wants to keep to my boundaries and comfort level.
I think I can safely say that I am happy!
:-)
